This year, we were looking to dramatically change our approach to distance learning as we will have the time to prepare "At Home Learning Bags" to send home for students. Engaging Kindergarten students with academic curriculum during live Zoom sessions is extremely challenging. They have a short attention span, they need a lot of support and they desire hands-on learning experiences. These bags will contain: whiteboards, markers, erasers, crayons, paper, journals, math counters, scissors, glue and letter manipulatives. We hope it helps to ease the stress of parents being thrust into the position of homeschool teacher helper and gives them the confidence to use the tools to inspire their children to learn.
We realized that there are unavoidable limitations when using video-conferencing for lessons. We would like to provide our students with magnetic whiteboards so that they can "show what they know" using math manipulatives to demonstrate their mathematical thinking. These whiteboards can be held up to the computer camera so that we can see their responses. Whiteboard marker is also easier to see than a pencil written on paper. Students love when the teachers can see that they are working hard and participating, so we want them to have the necessary tools to feel successful and develop that early love of learning.
