I teach in a very culturally and socioeconomically diverse area. Students need to develop an understanding for accepting differences in others' cultures. Not only will these engaging stories address the sixth-grade standards, but they help to address the need for empathy as well as other needs that have arisen with virtual and hybrid learning during this pandemic.
Students need actual books in their hands. Not just any book or novel, but an attention-grabbing novel that they can read and will not want to put down. I do not have enough copies of any novel to give one to each of my students. In the past, we have shared copies of novels during the school year. Due to COVID-19 safety protocols, students each need their own copies of these books.
Students will not only learn about different cultures and their practices when studying these novels, but they will learn how to express themselves in a way that is not offensive to others. It needs to be practiced. We will have discussions not only about what happened in the stories but how to express oneself verbally and in writing through virtual notebooks and other activities through Google Classroom.
Thank you for your support in helping me achieve my vision for my students.
