I have a classroom library, but most of the books are old. The school library isn't much better. The books are ancient, and the only new books students receive are from the title one money I get each year for supplies; or when I scour used books from Good Will. Many of the books I already have are for younger students, and they don't engage teenage readers.
It's difficult to push students to read when there are no books that they're interested in. I know they will be interested in Percy Jackson and Bluford books because they've asked for them, and I read the same books when I was a student. My classroom is a mini-library, so students can check-out these books to read at home. That's the goal: to get kids reading.
