From birth to early childhood, children use their five senses to explore and try to make sense of the world around them.
It’s an important part of early childhood development, and providing opportunities for children to actively use their senses as they explore their world through ‘sensory play’ is crucial to brain development. By providing sensory experiences, such as painting, bending wikki stix, rolling playdoh, learning how to use a tracer, or lacing beads my students are refining thresholds for different sensory information. These sensory and fine motor experiences help their brain create stronger connections to sensory input in their environment. We learn through play and these items are paramount in our daily learning activities.
