Representation matters. Stories matter. In our classroom, we believe that literacy is a means of liberation.
As a new teacher at RRMS, I want to ensure our classroom library is rich with stories that students can connect to. The texts on this list feature BIPOC characters, characters that are LGBTQAI2S+, characters with mental illness, characters learning to be body-positive, characters that are full of joy, characters that are grieving, characters that are radical, characters that are brilliant, and imaginative, artistic, and authentic.
As Kerry Washington once shared, "Having your story told as a woman, as a person of color, as a lesbian, as a trans person, or as any member of any disenfranchised community, is sadly often still a radical idea. There is so much power in storytelling, and there is enormous power in inclusive storytelling, in inclusive representations.鈥
In providing more representation in our classroom library, our students will find the power to explore, and potentially share, their own stories.
