My students are living through history by being students during a global pandemic. Due to health rules, they cannot share materials like books, pencils, paper, etc. My goal for this year is to allow my students to read the book The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas together as a class. I want each of my students to have their own physical book to make notes in and to highlight important sections. I have students who are learning virtually at home who will not have access to a book. I want to ensure that the students at home are able to have a physical copy of the book, instead of relying on PDFs and audio files. The underlying theme of The Hate U Give is discovering your voice and finding your identity. The main character, Starr, has different roles and identities that she must fulfill as a daughter, a high school student, a girl, and an African American. My students were stripped of their academic identity after they were dismissed in March of 2020, then came to high school as freshmen. They have to navigate a new building, meet new people, figure out their future, and discover who they want to be. I believe that by having my students read this book, they will learn about the events of modern day, as well as discover their individual voices and identities alongside Starr.
