Our school is currently operating under a hybrid model for the beginning of the year. My class has been split into two groups and as of right now, I will only have two days of in-person instruction with each group of students. This makes it even more important that I do what I can to make sure that my students can get the most out of those two days.
Having face shields to provide to students will be a huge help. By providing face shields I could give students an option of using their mask or using the shield, which may help my students who feel uncomfortable in their masks for large periods of time. Additionally, in first grade our biggest goal is to help our students become readers. To do this, we practice making the sounds and showing them how to blend them together to read words. By using face shields, I will be able to see children's faces to ensure that they are forming their sounds correctly and that they get the full experience of participating.
Another thing that we have had to consider this year is how we can limit the number of people in high traffic places. One of those areas in my room is the water fountain. I have encouraged families to bring water bottles if they can, but I would love to have water bottles to provide for students so that everyone can stay hydrated without having a constant stream of traffic by the water fountain area. My plan is for students to have a little cup attached to the side of their desk to place the water bottle in. Whenever they are thirsty, they can easily solve that problem.
