Each week when I introduce a new letter of the alphabet and the sound it makes to my students, I teach them about an animal that begins with that letter and sound. We make an animal craft using construction paper and other materials, and students recount to me a fact or two that they learned about that animal. This connects literacy with science. Connecting literacy with the real world is critical in helping students gain those necessary early literacy skills they need to become lifelong readers. Now the we're beginning the year remotely, I will be giving my students the materials needed so that they can still make the animal craft at home.
