My school is a magnet middle school for the arts. It attracts students who are interested in the performing, technical, and communication arts as well as kids who want to escape a neighborhood school. These students thrive in their electives and artistic skill levels increase quickly. The amazing thing about our school is that everyone can excel at something; our staff supports all types of gains and successes. I mostly teach 6th graders who are struggling readers. Our school library is overwhelming for them, because there are too many choices. Few have an experience with public libraries. Most will pick up a book and put it down. They may read the first 4 or 5 pages of every book they pick up, but never read a whole book unless it has been carefully chosen by me.
