Can you imagine not being able to communicate with the persons with whom you love the most? The majority of the students I work with as a Speech Therapist have autism spectrum disorder; a disorder which affects their social and communication skills. Some of these students are nonverbal or have minimal amounts of words they use and are unable to communicate their wants, needs and ideas. Others are more verbal but still unable to fully communicate without assistance. Other students I work with also experience communication difficulties such as mispronouncing sounds in words, understanding others, expressing themselves, and stuttering or dysfluencies. I know that with the use of an iPad and various applications I can use on the iPad will help all of my students. My students with autism can use communication board apps which show them visuals of what they may want to say and can actually even speak for them and "give them a voice".
I became a Speech Therapist because I want to help as many individuals as I can to "have a voice"!
Please help me help my students by being able to provide them with an opportunity of using an iPad and applications on that iPad to give them a voice and/or help them improve the voice they have by giving them an opportunity to communicate as best they can as most of us have been privileged enough to have just by being born. So...let's communicate!
