In my first year of teaching last year, I saw a lot of students turn away from the bookshelf because the books didn’t interest them. The lives my students live are not mirrored in the books they read. My priority is for my students to feel seen, heard, and a part of the school community. If students trust me to advocate for their self expression and identity, our learning becomes unstoppable.
Now, because we are learning online, It’s really difficult to get books back into the classroom for other students to come pick up in a timely manner. My hope is that by representing authors of color and the LGBTQIA+ community in large quantities, my students will be able to connect with themselves and the outside world. When I have to tell students I don't have the book they want, often they do not seek resources outside of school to acquire them. I truly believe my classroom library is a a place students can learn about themselves and others. No online text can replace the comfort of a book that speaks to you.
