During this unprecedented time, I am reflecting each day on how I can support my students. During the first two weeks of school I was fortunate to meet, connect, and assess my AMAZING second grade students before distance learning started last week. Headphones are critical. Students need them to focus and learn during online learning. Many students work in loud distracting environments. Headphones can break easily too. Students need headphones to log onto our Google Meet morning meetings, small group instruction, as well as direct instruction in the following: ELA, math, science, social studies, writing, and arts. Students also need headphones for their online programs (iReady Reading, iReady Math, and Kid Biz). Wobble chairs are a big hit as well! With an extensive amount of time on screens, wobble chairs are helpful for those students that need to move to focus as they work. Wobble chairs help students to focus, learn, and achieve !
This is a very stressful time for many families at home, and I want to make a difference by supporting the needs of my students. When we return back to the classroom, I'm preparing for a smooth transition. I am creating a flexible seating / desk area for those students that work best standing. In addition to the standing desk being used for student learning, the desk will be used for group STEM activities, rotating centers, student led conferencing meetings, and art activities. This will keep students comfortable, engaged, and ultimately productive! Last year I took a course on Social Emotional Learning. It was fascinating! "Standing has proven to be an effective way to improve memory and focus".
Headphones, wobble chairs, and a standing desk for students will make a positive impact on their learning, and establish a strong foundation for success in their academic career!
