I am requesting markers, colored pencils, compasses and rulers so that my students can create, decorate and explore the properties of geometric art. My students will learn the geometry of art, particularly of Islamic art. The main idea of this project is to recreate designs that students can find in Islamic decoration, such as windows, doors, flooring tiles, walls, pottery. Examples can be found at the Met Museum.
They will use compasses and rulers to recreate advanced geometric constructions, such as regular octagons, dodecagons, patterns and tessellation of different polygons, typically found in Islamic art.
With the visual impact of the final decoration, students will be able to explore symmetries and transformations involved, particularly rigid motions. Students in art or fashion majors could get some inspiration and apply some of these techniques in their creations. Exploring the geometric properties of these designs could help them find a connection with the real world, especially for those students interested in pursue a career as fashion designers.
