I teach second grade at a Title I kindergarten through 5th grade elementary school where 98% of students come from low income families. Over 95% of our students receive free or reduced price lunches, the highest percentage in our district. My students come from diverse backgrounds with different family dynamics.
Due to the current COVID-19 pandemic closing schools in Spring 2020, my students are struggling to adjust back to school. Many of my students are dealing with anxiety, fear, frustration, confusion, etc. In order to help my students regulate these emotions, I am requesting mental health books and sensory items. The books will serve as points of discussion for students to understand they are not alone and build their understanding of the feelings/emotions they are experiencing with the uncertainty of the world around them. The sensory items will engage their senses in order to promote relaxation, concentration, and attention. My students vary in academic needs, academic abilities, and language barriers, but I fully believe these items will benefit all students in my classroom as they adjust to the current reality.
