Wow, I have so many pre-literacy based games planned utilizing these supplies which engage their body and mind. For example, I will go into my teacher bag of 'a' items and pull out an apple, an alligator, an ax, etc and ask students what is the initial sound of all of these words. Student will respond verbally by saying the letter 'a' and will continue to identify the letter 'a' among the letter beads. We will continue with the rest of the alphabet discussing initial sounds, identifying letters, developing fine motor skills all while having fun creating their alphabet necklace. They can then take it home and study letter sound and recognition with their families. Additionally, students can also use these beads to spell their name, which is an essential skill. Students whose literacy advances more quickly can create site word necklaces or short sentences to take home and practice. I hope this gives you an idea of the tools our class needs to implement a multi-sensory approach to building pre-literacy skills in Pre-K 4!
