I am a first year teacher who is looking to help my students find success in every facet of life. I am a firm believer in flexible seating. I believe it is more necessary now than ever. The wobble chairs and balance balls would be used as flexible seating in my classroom.
Due to COVID, my 2nd grade students will essentially be confined to one room for the entire school day and only have recess 2x's a week. Physical activity is SO so necessary at their age, and the thought of it being neglected is too much to bear. I believe flexible seating is critical to incorporating movement, helping students to be comfortable, and improving concentration. Flexible seating also offers students options, and self-exploration to discover their own unique learning style.
Mental health and Social-emotional health are more important than ever. I want to create an area where students can tune out daily stressors, and tune into themselves. The bean bag chair would be a part of the classroom's "stress free" or "cool down corner". Where students have a space that is quiet, comfortable, and zen to recenter themselves (or simply just take a break to breathe) when they get upset. The lamination machine will help me to create posters and signs. I plan to use the laminator to make signs that will contribute to the cool down corner. I want to create signs that remind students of important breathing techniques. I plan to use the dry erase circles as a daily check-in with students, where they will draw how they are feeling that day. I want students to have an avenue for students to express their emotions and be heard.
