My students attend a charter school in its fourth year of operation. Despite the economic hardships many of their families face, they love coming to school every day. They are passionate about learning and enthusiastic about the opportunities ahead of them. They understand the hard work that it will take them to get to college, and they show grit when faced with challenges. My third graders need lots of exposure to literature in order to level the playing field between them and students in higher income communities.
