My students love to read good books when they can get their hands on them. I have a classroom library full of titles that are dated and worn. Many of them do not appeal to diverse students. All of my students need to see themselves reflected in the stories on my shelves especially students of color and new Americans.
Many of my students do not have access to books at home. As a result of the pandemic, checking out books from the school or local library is difficult. With these titles, I intend to get a book in the hand of every student who needs one. And, as the research suggests, students who read more are more successful in school.
My aim is to build enjoyment and confidence in reading and a foundation for success. I believe these books will help me toward that goal.
