Across the country, teachers of visual arts, music and more are making difficult decisions on how they will continue reaching their students. When the Coronavirus forced the lock down of our schools, I was forced to re-evaluate how I would reach my students. Teaching behind a screen was never an obstacle I thought I would face in my teaching career, but I knew the show must go on.
The arts are essential and I was anxious to keep the learning going. I decided to create a public online page entitled 鈥淢rs. O鈥檚 Art Studio鈥 that offers online art education that my students and ALL art loving students across the county could do right at home. I knew this wouldn鈥檛 be an easy task creating a public page from scratch, but I was up for the challenge. On April 1st 2020, I launched my online art page that features tutorials, step-by-step art lessons, and recorded videos of myself teaching lessons.
Throughout this process, I quickly found that my online platforms allow students to continue sharing and talking about their artwork, just as they would in school.
Amid all the loss, I am trying to maintain student excitement for enrichment activities by showing students new materials and resources they can access online or in their homes. Not only can these activities give students a much-needed break from core academic coursework, but also they provide students freedom to work on independent creative projects. I hope that with a video camera that I can enhance online learning opportunities.
