Seventy percent of visitors to the FCMS/MBK Bookmobile were bilingual and there is a huge need for bilingual books. Our bookmobile has traveled to 31 locations since September 23, 2020, and has distributed almost 6,000 books. The bilingual books were usually the first books we ran out of and the hardest books for us to acquire.
A bilingual book assists all generations and provides benefits to both child and parent. Children learn to read in a new language while also maintaining the connection to their first language. Early readers and nonfiction dual language books were quite popular and the most appreciated. The parents also benefit by learning a new language, for adults, the most popular dual language books were nonfiction. And most importantly, the bilingual books provide parents the opportunity to read to their children. Some teens asked for Young Adult novels in their native language. Which we try to provide since we believe the love of reading can happen in any language.
In a time of virtual education, reading is fundamental.
