My class will read The Jacket by Andrew Clements and explore racism and bias. Students will analyze the author's use of visualization and purpose regarding point of view and word choice. They will learn to conduct an interview and interview family members about racism and bias that their families have experienced or witnessed. My students will create advocacy projects that will integrate their readings, their experiences, and their family stories. The students will then develop and implement an action project to educate others and advocate for change. These projects will be shared with the students' families and the community.
