I teach Life Skills with my students with special needs to help them understand Mathematical content and gain independent living skills. What a better way to learn Algebra than with using cooking measurements and sewing patterns. I took over the old Home Economics room. It hadn't been used in 12 years and almost everything was either rusted, broke, or had missing parts. Through plenty of garage sales, I was able to restock the kitchen.
Sewing machines will be the perfect addition to enhance our project-based Mathematical content and teach the students Life Skills. While working a pattern the students will be using Algebra, enhance fine motor skills, and develop a Life Skill which could possibly lead to a career. The sewing machines that were left in the Home Ec room are in complete disarray. The students have tried to use them and got extremely frustrated. New machines that the students can share would be a wonderful addition to our school.
