I have built a dramatic play center in my classroom out of wood. I plan to decorate the stand each month according to what we are learning in class. This will be a free play option for students but also a literacy center where they can take turns being the customer or the worker.
Although dramatic play is not apart of my "curriculum", I plan to match each dramatic play theme to the TK standards. My students will have writing prompts each month that go along with the theme.
Having these items available to my students allows children to interact with text and literacy that they are becoming familiar with. It allows them to interact with the text first hand by writing menus and shopping lists. It also allows them to see multiple purposes of text, you can have coupons, letters, bullet points, posters, receipts, and the list goes on. Allowing them to see these types of texts helps them produce text on their own. Lastly, these dramatic play themes help by expanding their comprehension. It allows them to understand different characters and jobs, the setting around them, problem-solving, and how they all connect together. They will understand how cause and effect works, you must ask the customer what they want before making the food.
