As a School Social Worker at 2 Elementary Schools, students frequently need supports to de-escalate from intense emotions. Fidgets are incredibly popular with students, can provide them an item that provides a tactile output of energy, and is a neutral item to focus on when feeling intense emotions. When anyone is in a heightened state of emotions, it becomes difficult to say what the problem is and how to solve it. Students are in need of different ways to express themselves, outside of verbal expression. By utilizing fidgets, children can focus on the tactile-oriented task of using the fidget, and then can participate in problem-solving and de-escalation strategies. When given a fidget tool, with the help of a supportive adult, students can practice helpful self-management skills such as managing stress, controlling impulses, etc.
