I am asking for portable lap desks to be added to my classroom. My sixth grade math class is currently set up in a very traditional way with tables and chairs, without any other options for students to be able to utilize other spaces of the room. My classroom size would allow for the lap desks to be used on the floor, while still ensuring student’s learning and safety can be properly supervised. Research shows that by allowing students to be comfortable in the classroom will help get students more engaged and increase class participation. Currently, my students ask daily to sit on the floor, but then it does not allow them to have a proper writing space, or the tools to keep them on task and focused. With the addition of the surf-style lap desks, my students would have an adequate work space while staying engaged.
The primary learning needs of the flexible seating would target student’s engagement and allow me to target more student’s learning styles. Students would still be able to work in groups or individually with the desks, while being more alert and comfortable. I think the desks would give the students a familiar working position, since they have adapted well to working in non-traditional positions in the home with virtual learning.
The outcome of the use of the surf style desks would result in students becoming more engaged, therefore allowing students to achieve more growth
