Over the past eighteen years of teaching special education and at-risk students I have observed a common theme; students like to move and often are more focused when they are given the option to move. The flexible seating that was chosen provides the students with a variety of options to move while continuing to stay engaged in classroom discussions and activities.
Along with the flexible seating two types of exercise equipment were selected to provide students an option to release pent up energy in a positive and healthy way. I teach students different coping strategies including exercises that they can use when they are angry, frustrated, or feel anxious. Demonstrating and practicing the coping strategies will provide students a clear understanding of the option to exercise.
My goal to provide a calm and inviting learning environment will be accomplished with different lighting options. The current classroom lighting can strain students' eyes and make the classroom cold and less inviting to learn in. With "warmer" light hues students will be able to stay focused and more engaged in learning.
