Being a first year teacher, I was not left any supplies for my students. This proved to be a huge barrier for my classroom during the first part of the semester - over half of my students are from low income households and do not have access to art supplies.
With these supplies, I can ensure each student has their own supplies for each class period and the ability to create the art they dream of.
Equity is a big rock of our district and having enough supplies for my diverse students would mean we can create more projects that deepen their understanding of art and reflect their personalities.
My project is for students to make their mark and represent themselves through a personal mandala. Mandalas are deeply tied to cultural understanding and personal beliefs. In this project, students will be required to create an "all about me" mandala that represents their individual interests and characteristics. My sixth grade artists will use markers to create their mandalas while my seventh and eighth grade artists will use colored pencils. Sixth grade will be focusing on shape and proportions while seventh and eighth grade use the colored pencils to blend, create value, and complementary color palettes. Mandalas also require a cross-curricular lesson in math to create the grid and angles that are pertinent to accurately planning their layout.
