Reading in a second language is the quickest way to acquire new vocabulary and improve proficiency. Many of my students are scared to read in German - they have had previous negative experiences with reading in English, and lack confidence. I am requesting reading options in comprehensible German.
By expanding my class library of comprehensible, highly engaging German language novels, my students will continue to develop literacy skills that transfer to all content areas. The pride and sense of accomplishment my students express after finishing an entire novel in German is truly inspiring. Many students who previously professed their "hatred" of reading are now flying through novels during our free reading time.
Our classroom library helps to strengthen our sense of community. Students laugh and complain, retell and expand upon topics they've encountered in their novels as we discuss, write about, and ponder thought-provoking themes and topics.
