When I started teaching I had little idea of the impact I would make in my students’ lives. I have gained so much perspective just by sharing life lessons and experiences with them, the kind that can only be brought about by reading books. I would love to broaden their horizons and introduce them to newer novels that they can feel connected to.
We live in a small rural community with limited diversity. I consider this an opportunity to allow them to live through these novels and teach them real life lessons in the process. I am hoping through engagement strategies, interactive lessons, and thoughtful conversations, I can shift the balance of the canon and make reading more meaningful and thought provoking.
