I am a 100% online teacher. The only 'face-to-face' time I get with my students is when we have a virtual meeting online.
I only have a single computer screen so, when I share my screen with my students in order to show examples or to explain anything in a meaningful way, I'm unable to see their faces as I teach.
During a lesson, I have to completely stop instruction several times to switch back to the meeting screen in order to see if students have questions or even just to get a quick 'thumbs up/thumbs down' for understanding. This makes the online learning experience feel even more foreign to myself and my students. With every pause I have to click off of the screen I am sharing to be able to actually see the faces of my students. Lessons feel choppy and not at all anything resembling 'normal'.
I miss seeing faces when I teach. I miss being able to read body language to decide where my lesson will go next. Having one screen has made my instruction feel impersonal and scripted rather than wholly organic and meaningful.
I miss being in school, but more importantly, I miss their faces.
