Addressing individual student needs is currently at the forefront of education. As we have transitioned back to face-to-face instruction, the variances in Distance Learning experiences have become blatantly apparent. Administering literacy diagnostics is a highly effective approach to determine how best to help students make adequate growth. Assessing foundational reading skills yields valid results when completed with students individually. Using an iPad to help administer 1-on-1 assessments, offers an opportunity to identify areas in which a student needs additional support. An iPad allows mobility in the classroom, so that each student and I can work together in a quiet setting. It will afford me the opportunity to immediately document the resulting data for later analysis, while taking the student’s comfort level into consideration.
It is imperative that the social, emotional, and academic needs of students are determined and addressed. Using an iPad for screeners such as identifying letters and sounds, oral reading fluency, or comprehension of a text, is a step towards improving student growth. The ability to have access to reliable technology ensures that the data gleaned from the tests can be readily available to analyze and guide instruction. The interventions to combat academic gaps are derived directly from the assessments. Having the privilege of utilizing an iPad when giving my students the opportunity to “show what they know”, will make the priority of targeting their specific needs a much easier task! Thank you for your consideration!
