I chose books that are directly related to our curriculum which can be difficult to read but have versions that make it easier to understand.
Also my students are a diverse body and oftentimes it is difficult for them to relate to books we read. So I decided to get books that are diverse that hopefully speak to their lives and are a better reflection of their personal experiences and journeys.
My students have a social justice centered curriculum, however many speak Spanish as their primary or secondary language or come from low-income households. Almost all of them work outside of doing schoolwork. Because of this, I want to make their learning as engaging as possible without losing the rigor of academia. Often in my lessons I record myself reading, create pdfs and elicit discussions ideally lead by the students.
