My mentor teacher taught me that, we as teachers, need to replicate the 20 minutes of reading a day that parents are supposed to do to the children in our class. Simulating lap reading can only be done if each child has the actual book in their hands. Seeing the actual text will increase children's fluency and decoding as they hear and see the teacher reading it. Throughout my career, I have worked to get texts I read into my students hands. I am looking to diversify the sets of class books that we have at my school.
All students deserve to learn about diverse life experiences by reading about the lives of others. This project will give students an opportunity to access texts about the past and present that they might not select, or even be able to read on their own. These texts will enthrall my young readers and help history come alive. Reading texts about diverse experiences will also help students learn from the past and draw connections to the present.
