Many of my students come from bilingual households with little or no reading materials at home. Building their language skills through literature is essential. When they come to school, they are excited to borrow books from our tiny classroom library. We read aloud in class, practice pronunciation, engage in reader's theatre, and dive deep into character's stories. Sadly, with virtual learning, these kids are unable to visit campus as frequently to pick up books. As a first-year teacher, my class collection is also very small and students have already begun requesting more books to get their hands on! Included in this collection are the most popular boxed sets, including classics from John Green, spooky stories from Stephen King, and engaging graphic novels. For many of my students, these books are their escape from the world around them as they navigate their teenage lives on top of a pandemic right outside their doors.
Every single book in this collection was personally requested by title from a student in our class. My kids choose 1 new book to read per month at home, and keep a "Thought Log" to journal their thinking as they enjoy their books. Although I have never met them in person, it has been amazing to see them grow not only as readers, but as writers, the more they are exposed to authors of different genres and styles. The best way to create strong readers is to give kids a voice in what they read, and my goal is to do just that. Help me continue their desire to read with new and exciting books to place in their hands.
