Literacy is a great way to engage with my students and focus on their specific goals. Through books I am able to have students work on their specific sounds they may be working on (articulation disorders), teach grammar (e.g. past tense, irregular past tense, plurals, sentence structure, etc.), teach problem solving, inferencing, social interactions, emotional regulation, comprehension, WH questions, following directions and my Augmentative and Alternative Communication learners (AAC).
While working on their specific speech and language goals I am able to work on phonological awareness, reading fluency, and comprehension, which is an area many students with speech and language difficulties will have problems with.
