The students currently have access to a set of small Boomwhackers. Boomwhackers can be used for many things, including note learning, rhythmic practice, as well as making entire songs. To do this, however, many songs need more notes than we currently have. The Boomwhackers included in this project would expand the small set that the school already owns, and make it possible to use these fun instruments to accomplish several academic and musical goals. During the Covid-19 pandemic, they are especially useful as they are made of plastic and thus, quick and easy to sanitize between uses.
Our students live in a remote, rural part of the country and don't get a lot of exposure to the music of other cultures. The conga drums funded by this project will be a springboard into a series of lessons for all the elementary students focusing on World Music while at the same time, giving them hands-on experience with percussion instruments at a young age.
