I am looking to add some graphic novels and high-interest books to my classroom library. These books will continue to enhance the print-rich classroom that I strive to create. My classroom library is a place that my students really enjoy. I strive to let them know that reading time is not work time, it is a pleasurable activity. As part of that, I always sit in a comfy chair, and let them sit around me when I read to them. When they read independently they are allowed to use pillows or lay on the fluffy carpet in the reading corner I have created. All the books that live in my classroom are treated with love and care, and students are thankful for the opportunities to read. All of these books have been chosen with my students in mind.
Recently, I have seen a huge interest in graphic novels, especially from my reluctant readers and my ELL students. I have already purchased as many as I can afford twice since we have been back at school, and I cannot keep these titles on the shelves. This is a wonderful problem to have! As a result, I am trying to increase the amount of these types of books I have in my classroom. With these new books, my students will be able to choose from a variety of books that will allow them to read independently at their own grade level. They will also be able to choose books that interest them. The best way to increase reading ability is to read more, and these books will continue to help my students grow stronger in reading. My students have already grown so much as readers this year, and this project will only help enrich their experiences with the printed word.
