My twenty five students (known by all as the "Simpson Super Stars" began the excitement of their long anticipated kindergarten year behind a technology device. This year, they wouldn't have the opportunity to meet a new friend on the large classroom rug, share a book, or draw and build. The natural call and response of a face to face conversation, replaced by answers on ZOOM.
At home skill bags will be created for my students to engage in socio dramatic and language play at home. Puppet play hopes to build my early learners social and language skills-a key developmental goal for five and six year old learners! The access that my students would have had to the print and language rich environment of their classroom is not possible this year. The skill bags will allow them to engage in fine motor, literacy and math development. Children will build confidence in their emerging reading skills while reenacting parts of the text with their puppet, fine motor skill will be strengthened through engagement with the playdough (and later on the dry erase boards) and using a hexahedron ( in this case a dice), students can build counting, operations and algebraic thinking, as well as composing and decomposing skills.
Nothing replaces authentic in person engagement but I hope to bring some of our classroom to their homes!
