I teach 11th grade American literature in Newark, DE. Most of the junior English grade curriculum is full of older American classics (which I love). However, I would love to infuse the curriculum with more diverse and modern texts. Therefore, I chose some pieces of literature which I know will excite my students - Just Mercy and The Hate You Give.
My high schoolers need some class texts that mirror themselves. Just Mercy and The Hate You Give have intelligent protagonists who are moved to action. They aim to change their American communities to become more racially just and equal. Hopefully, these books will inspire my students to become citizens of service and to always fight for what's right.
