Currently, CMS has a small hydroponics garden and a larger soil-based garden. The goal is to grow enough produce to feed the school and the surrounding community. Food insecurity is a growing concern for my students. I want to teach them to grow food in a small environment with the hopes that they will create their own gardens.
Last year we produced a small group, including carrots, lettuce, onions, and peppers. The staff and students loved the vegetables. Our garden club (student-run) has donated to the Las Vegas Rescue Mission and participated in farmer market events. Participation in events that demonstrate empathy and compassion increases the student's understanding of community members' issues. The activities also teach students the science behind growing food in Las Vegas.
