Dancing is a great way to engage students. It allows students to express themselves without having to speak, it helps to build self esteem and it gives them discipline that they could use in other school subjects.
Our class has some older yoga mats. They have begun to rip, and have been used for so long they are flat. My students have a hard time laying on them and say there is no difference from laying on the floor. Having new yoga mats will help my students with relaxing and meditation during the yoga unit. In class, my students can use the yoga mats for a more relaxing yoga experience.
Students will be able to further their learning about dancing to the beat with our rhythm sticks. Currently, students clap to the beat of the music but afterwards their hands hurt. The rhythm sticks will allow my students to learn about how the beat of the music goes with dancing while not being distracted by their hands hurting. Once students know how to use the rhythm sticks we will add movement to the beat like stomping, marching, walking, skipping, jumping and hoping.
The hula hoops and rhythm sticks will be used to enhance students gross motor skills.
