My students are currently working in a typical classroom setup that is an un-inviting space for group sessions as well as one-on-one therapeutic sessions. In the current set up, room furniture and colors are dull and intended for typical teaching. I would like to transform the current space into a warm and welcoming home-like environment. By doing this the students will feel as if they are in a calming space that is created for their needs. Having furniture that supports the idea of "sit down get comfortable" is important. This is a shared space utilized for group sessions as well as one-on-one sessions. Having soothing colors and environment helps support their emotional needs. Another purpose of the space is to utilize it for mindfulness activities such as yoga and meditation which cannot be achieved in the current setup.
My goal is to transform a regular classroom into a space accessible for all students when feeling stressed or needing to deescalate. The room will be furnished with other resources such as books, games, and activities to support SEL.
