During these divisive times, it is important to understand the true meaning of racism and the history, events , ideas and people that are involved. I would love to hold a school wide book study on the non-fiction title Stamped: Racism, Anti-Racism, and You by Jason Reynolds and Ibram X Kendi and Just Mercy: a story of Justice and Redemption by Bryan Stevenson. This would involve the student body and faculty. Teachers will assign readings and collaborate to create lessons each day. I am asking for print copies of these titles to make this happen. I would like to do this during Black History month and the unit would involve at least 14 days of reading, discussing, listening and writing school wide during English and History classes. This topic is very emotional and challenging; therefore, families will also be involved in reading and discussion at home as well.
Racism is real. Understanding racism and its legacy in America is the main focus of this unit and is essential to creating an Antiracist society. Each day will involve a reading assignment, key concepts, essential questions with discussion, homework, and a journal. Teachers will collaborate and create a culminating end of unit project. I have introduced the idea to the faculty and they are very excited.
