Our school has developed a behavior matrix that spells out behavior expectations for our scholars in the classroom. We have found that adherence to these expectations helps our scholars socially, academically, and behaviorally. The pandemic has interrupted social development and the learning of our scholars in many ways. Support is needed to assist our scholars in getting back on track to achieving academic success.
Our district has adopted a curriculum for social and emotional learning (SEL) that falls in line with our behavioral expectations. We have also set up a reward system for scholars to acknowledge positive behaviors and academic achievement. We have found that sensory items are not only desirable for our scholars but they also help them to remain focused on tasks and stayed encouraged to work towards academic, social, and behavior goals. SEL provides structure and a strong foundation for all other learning in the classroom. When students use SEL skills to guide their behaviors, rewards can not only encourage ongoing positive behaviors but also impact learning in a positive way.
The sensory items we would like would be used as rewards for our scholars which will in turn help them in the classroom to have their learning supported in a fun and innovative way. Scholars will earn "bucks" based on their behavior and accomplishments. With these "bucks" they will be permitted to select a sensory item that will encourage them to stay on task and work effectively in the classroom.
