Reading is the most essential aspect of school. Many of my students are below grade level and have very little background knowledge outside of their small village. By having class sets and small group sets of books we can read together to establish a love of reading.
I have requested a variety of books to do culturally applicable content (Julie of the Wolves), high interest (Shiloh) and history (Revolutionary War). They will also work in partners to do a research project about a person or event during the Revolutionary War using the Who was/What was series books.
