I have a lot of reluctant readers in my classes, whether it is because they do not like to read or because they have difficulty reading. I want to engage my students and have a wide selection of genres and diverse books to get my students interested in reading.
I chose books that deal with bullying, suicide, disease, accidents that cause drastic changes in lives, and immigration. Paul, Big, and Small is one example of a book I want to share with my students. Within this book, there are different students who deal with bullying in different ways, there is a student dealing with cancer, and there is a student dealing with a family member who has bi-polar disorder. I plan on reading this book with my students. I want my students to connect to these books and I want us to have necessary discussions in the classroom.
