Due to COVID-19 and in-person learning being pushed back, thirteen of my fifteen students have never stepped foot in an actual school setting. Kindergarten is supposed to be a time when students discover their forever friends, fall in love with reading and feel unconditional love from teachers. But this year that has not happened and will not happen for these kids due to the virus that is affecting the entire world. Because of this, learning has had to take on an entirely new platform and teachers and families everywhere are trying to figure out ways to make it work. It has been devastating for so many families, and especially hard on our youngest learners.
A commonality between all of my students is that they love books. We read daily together and they are just beginning to learn the foundational skills needed in order to unlock the code to reading. They are inquisitive, imaginative and willing to learn but it is so difficult for them because many of them just do not have the resources to do so. Through our Zoom sessions I gain a clear vision into their homes, and it is evident that many families do not have the resources necessary to provide any sort of library. This is the reason that I am asking for help from Donors Choose. I believe that my students deserve to have books at their fingertips in order to foster their love for reading. I realize that they have access to reading materials electronically, but during distance learning students are spending so much time in front of a screen that I would love for them to have the actual paper copy of the book in order to enjoy and share with others at home.
