Each of my students who come to work in my classroom have an IEP and struggle with some aspect of learning. Our current state, with COVID and social distancing, hasn’t helped. Our students who struggled and liked to get peer help, can no longer do so. Our students who use to be able to have preferential seating may not be able to do so, because of needing to stay socially distanced for contact tracing. Having different seating options for my students that they can choose and keep in their area will help with anxiety, nerves, and just the general wiggles that come with being a kid. I have a few options now and can see the benefits for the kids who are able to utilize them.
Flexible seating allows them to wiggle, rock, bounce, lean or stand, which increases oxygen flow to the brain, blood flow and core strength. Wobble seats are known to improve student’s concentration, and keeps young minds more alert and focused. Giving students a choice in their seating helps give them the feeling of being empowered and having some control over their environment.
