Outdoor Classroom Description
Our Outdoor Classroom at Arlington will be a living laboratory for students to access a hands-on experience in growing, harvesting, and tasting fresh fruits, vegetables and herbs. It will also provide a safe space for students to learn about environmental education on the school grounds, as many of our students do not have the ability to grow gardens at home. Students will also be empowered as leaders with our Green Team consisting of five students that will collect compost and do weekly maintenance. The Outdoor Classroom will serve as an inviting learning space for all of our teachers to bring their classes to learn outdoors, providing much needed fresh air and sunshine. This is especially important for our population who may not have access to safe outdoor spaces. This space will also serve as a place for de-escalating students with guided mindfulness activities in nature. All in all, our outdoor classroom will add a positive place for students to be exposed to environmental education, encourage outdoor class instruction and spark curiosity in growing and eating healthy food.
We have a green space behind our art room. It provides enough room for our raised beds and includes an area that can be utilized for outdoor learning. It is our vision to create five raised theme garden beds to grow a pollinator garden, vegetables, and herbs to teach sustainability and healthy eating. Furthermore we plan to integrate literacy with “Story Walks” and encourage stress relief and de-escalation with Guided Meditations with nature.
