In 2nd grade students move from learning to read to reading to learn. If a reader is still struggling with basic reading skills they often become demotivated when they are not able to read books that they have become interested in as they mature. Having digital versions of popular children's chapter books will allow the struggling readers in my classroom to read what they really want to read while they continue to grow as reading decoders.
Students who use the digital versions of the books will hold the real books in their hand as they listen and this will assist them in learning unknown vocabulary as well as feeling good about being able to read the same titles their peers are recommending.
